CPCAB Level 4 Courses

CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling

This two-year part-time qualification is intended for people who wish to train to become a professional counsellor working within a counselling agency. It will build on previous learning and give you the advanced knowledge, skills and competencies needed to work as a therapeutic counsellor. You’ll explore different theoretical counselling approaches; how to work ethically, safely and professionally; how to work with difference and diversity in counselling work; and how to develop your self-awareness and reflective practice as a counsellor. You’ll gain practical counselling experience as a trainee in a supervised placement and undertake 20 hours of personal counselling and 20 hours of personal development activities of your choice.

Placement

You’ll volunteer as a counsellor and will need to achieve a minimum of 100 supervised hours in a formal counselling agency. Your placement will give you further work experience and contact with employers. You’ll be supported in finding a suitable placement for the 2nd year of the programme.

Course Assessment

Over the two years you will be expected to build an ongoing portfolio of coursework, undergo observations of counselling skills practice, and complete an externally assessed case review.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to have successfully completed a Level 2 Counselling Skills and a Level 3 Counselling Studies qualification to qualify for our Level 4 Diploma course. You will need to complete and application form and interview to establish your suitability for the course.

Successful completion of this Diploma course means that you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service – initially within the context of an agency’s service framework but later you may progress to independent practice. It can also lead to progression onto other qualifications and training in order to become an independent practitioner or work in a specialist area. Courses may include the CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, the CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People or the CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory.

Potential job roles include but are not limited to:

  • A counsellor employed by a college
  • A counsellor working in the third sector
  • A counsellor employed by a charity
  • A counsellor employed by the NHS as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP)
  • An ‘adult’ counsellor in independent practice (with additional training and support)
